Hotel average length of stay: how to calculate ALOS
Calculate hotel ALOS with consistent room stays and nights. Worked examples cover group bookings, month boundaries and room nights versus guest nights.

The short answer
Divide the complete nights of a selected set of stays by the number of those stays. For a room-based measure, split group bookings into individual room stays. Use the same group for both parts of the calculation and keep guest nights separate from room nights.
Average length of stay helps a hotel understand how many nights a guest visit or room reservation typically lasts. The report name alone is insufficient: unless the definition of a stay is written down, two apparently valid figures can measure different things.
This guide uses room-based ALOS. Its purpose is to establish a consistent comparison of short and long stays for hotels in Azerbaijan. Every example is illustrative, not a market benchmark for Baku, Gabala or another destination.
ALOS is different from booking lead time
SiteMinder describes ALOS as average length of stay. Our unit here is the complete accommodation period for one booked room. ALOS = complete nights of the selected room stays ÷ number of those room stays.
If the guest moves to another physical room during that visit, do not count a new stay under this method. If an export represents the move in separate rows, combine them using the original stay reference without counting the same night twice. The aim is to measure the full accommodation period, not the number of room changes.
The interval between making a reservation and arriving is booking lead time. A reservation made on 2 October, arriving on 10 October and departing on 13 October has an eight-day lead time and a three-night stay. Departure day is not an additional night.
Keep room nights and guest nights separate
Two people sharing one room for three nights produce three room nights and six guest nights. Putting six in a room-based calculation doubles the result. State the unit explicitly in the report heading.
| Data item | Rule for room-based ALOS |
|---|---|
| Guest count | Do not multiply nights by guests |
| Multi-room reservation | Count each room stay separately |
| Hourly use | Keep it outside the overnight average |
| Cancellations and no-shows | Exclude from completed actual stays |
A group leader may have one booking document covering five rooms for two nights. That is ten room nights and five room stays: 10 ÷ 5 = 2 nights. Dividing by the single document to report ten nights mixes incompatible units.
A worked example
Five completed single-room stays lasted 1, 2, 2, 4 and 6 nights. The total is fifteen nights across five stays, so ALOS = 15 ÷ 5 = 3 nights. Guest count does not change this calculation.
An average can hide the distribution. Three of these stays lasted no more than two nights. Show counts of one-night, two-to-three-night and longer stays alongside the average so the manager can see both the result and its composition.
Use one rule across month boundaries
One practical cohort is stays with a completed departure during the month. A stay beginning on 29 September and ending on 3 October belongs to the October cohort with all four nights under this method. That does not assign four nights to October occupancy.
Occupancy uses individual calendar nights. The totals in an ADR, RevPAR and occupancy report can therefore differ from the ALOS worksheet. Removing September nights from the numerator while retaining the complete stay in the denominator changes the measure.
Monthly review checklist
- Write whether the measure is based on rooms, guests or booking documents.
- Select the cohort using one stable criterion, such as departure date.
- Check actual dates and extended stays.
- Separate duplicate records, cancellations and hourly use.
- Expand multi-room bookings into room-level stays.
- Keep total nights and stay count visible separately.
- Compare periods and sources using the same method.
A longer stay is not automatically more profitable. Discounts, service workload and alternative demand on those dates also matter. Before applying a minimum-night condition across the calendar simply to increase the average, investigate specific gaps and requests for short stays.
What should you check in BirOtel?
BirOtel offers reporting and Excel export. This article does not confirm a built-in ALOS dashboard, minimum-stay restriction or the availability of every required export field. Test how you can obtain room-level records, actual arrival/departure dates and status in a demonstration.
If the data is incomplete, do not label the resulting figure as precise. Record which stays the worksheet covers and reconcile a sample manually. When stay dates change, recalculate from updated records instead of reusing an older extract.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good ALOS? There is no single target for every hotel. Compare your own guest mix and economic results.
Does three days mean three nights? Not necessarily. A stay from 10 to 12 October is two nights.
How should hourly bookings appear? In a separate group measured in hours. Do not add them to overnight ALOS without an explicit conversion methodology.
